Dark Matter — Cover Illustration for Scientific American

Scientific American commissioned a cover and page spread illustration on the theme of dark matter — one of the most fascinating and mysterious subjects in modern physics.

Dark matter cannot be seen or photographed. Representing it visually requires a purely conceptual approach — translating an invisible phenomenon into something compelling and scientifically evocative. The illustration depicts an abstract vision of dark matter as a shadow world of mysterious atoms and forces.

Art director Michael Mrak guided the visual direction throughout the process. The final image was built in Houdini and Octane Render, with compositing in Photoshop. Working with multiple render layers — beauty, ambient occlusion — allowed precise control over the final atmosphere.
